The short answer is, yes and no.
First, the No
In general, hair loss is a pretty normal activity. You see, a hair follicle grows at about 4 inches a year for about three years, then it waits for a new hair to come up and push out the old follicle. When you take a shower or brush your hair and you see some hairs on your brush, those are just old hairs that have been pushed out by new hair.
On average a man or woman will lose about 100 to 125 hairs per day, so seeing hairs in your shower drain or on your hairbrush every day is not a bad thing as long as the number is around that level.
And Now, the Yes
While hair loss is natural and normal, excessive hair loss is not natural or normal. And if it happens on a consistent basis, that could be cause for concern. It is a good idea to see your doctor and share as much information about your hair loss – detail like when the largest clumps appear, how consistent the hair loss has been, or if it has gotten progressively worse.
There are several possible causes. So you should keep an eye on any medications you have started taking, or completed, around the time that the hair loss occurred, or check the results of your latest physical to see if there is a cause that can be tied back to something with your body.
